Darwi Extra Light Modelling Clay – Same Size, Almost Weightless (160g Block)
Don’t let the size fool you. This block looks the same as a standard 500g pack of clay, but weighs just 160g. Darwi Extra Light is an ultra-light, air-drying modelling clay that’s perfect for projects where weight matters just as much as shape.
Soft, smooth, and incredibly easy to handle, it’s ideal for larger creations, jewellery components, cosplay pieces, ornaments, and anything you don’t want weighing you down. It dries without the need for baking and can be painted or decorated once fully cured.
Why you’ll love it:
- Same block size as standard 500g clay, but only 160g
- Ultra-lightweight – perfect for wearable or hanging pieces
- Air dries naturally – no oven needed
- Smooth and easy to shape
- Great for school projects, props, and large designs
How to Use Darwi Extra Light
- Prepare your workspace
Work on a clean, smooth surface. This clay is light and soft, so it’s easy to handle.
- Condition the clay
Knead gently to make it soft and even. It usually requires very little effort compared to denser clays.
- Shape your design
Sculpt by hand or with tools. Ideal for larger forms without adding bulk weight.
- Joining pieces
Press pieces together firmly. Lightly dampening the join can improve adhesion.
- Refine details
Smooth with fingers or tools. Because it’s so light, avoid over-handling delicate sections.
- Drying
Allow to air dry in a ventilated area. Drying time is typically 24 to 48 hours depending on thickness.
- Finishing
Once dry, paint, decorate, or seal as desired. Handle with care, as it remains lightweight rather than dense.
Texture & Appearance When Dry
Texture:
Dries to a very lightweight, slightly foamy feel, similar to dense craft foam rather than traditional clay. It’s firm enough to hold its shape, but not heavy or rock-hard like stone-drying clays. The surface has a soft, slightly velvety texture with a gentle grip.
Appearance:
The finish is matte and smooth, with a clean, simple look. It doesn’t have the dense, ceramic-like appearance of heavier clays, instead leaning toward a lighter, almost airy finish.
Colour
Dries to a bright white colour, making it ideal for painting and decorating. Colours applied over the surface appear vibrant and true.
Comparison – Darwi Extra Light vs Standard Darwi Clay
- Weight:
Extra Light is dramatically lighter (160g vs 500g for the same block size)
- Feel when dry:
Extra Light: lightweight, slightly foamy
Standard Darwi: solid, chalky, ceramic-like
- Best for:
Extra Light: jewellery, ornaments, cosplay, large lightweight builds
Standard Darwi: sculptures, carvings, heavier decorative pieces
- Durability:
Extra Light: firm but lightweight
Standard Darwi: harder and more stone-like
Handy Tips
- Perfect for earrings and wearable pieces where weight matters
- Avoid very thin, unsupported sections as they can be fragile
- Store unused clay airtight
- Seal finished pieces for added durability
Big shapes, minimal weight. If regular clay feels too heavy, this is your go-to for light, creative freedom.
